Five Apps, Six Rounds, No Participation Trophies
It has been some time since short-drama apps were a niche curiosity. In Q1 2025, the US generated 49% of the roughly $700M in global in-app revenue that Sensor Tower counted for the category. Full-year 2025 ended up at roughly $2.8–3B, and by Q1 2026 the quarterly figure had grown to about $750M. If you have ever searched a store for a short reels app, you have run into at least one of play drama app the five names that lead the conversation: ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave. On the surface, the apps look identical, offering vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. Beneath the surface, though, they diverge on ownership, pricing, platforms and extras, and the differences affect what you pay and where you can watch. We put them through six rounds, picking a winner in each, and used only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.
The Big Comparison Grid
Here is the full field on one screen before the rounds get underway. The prices reflect the US App Store as of September 2026, and they change by country, platform and promotion. Install counts come from each app’s Google Play listing. Media Partners Asia estimates the market shares, which cover the microdrama market outside China. When a cell says “not reported”, no reliable source published the figure, and we would rather leave a gap than guess. See the rounds below as the commentary and the grid as the scoreboard.

Round 1: Ownership and Size
Being the incumbent, ReelShort still holds the most weight. MPA assigns it about 29% of the market outside China; launched in August 2022, it comes from Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and backed by China’s COL Group. According to MPA, its 2025 revenue reached $785M, with $1.05B projected for 2026. Singapore’s StoryMatrix operates DramaBox as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology; the app launched in April 2023 and has about 21%. Sensor Tower had ReelShort ahead $130M to $120M in Q1 2025, but by Q1 2026 the two were tied at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. DramaWave, often mistyped as “dreamwave”, is the youngest app here, yet it already has about 13% and its annualized revenue reportedly passed $700M by Q2 2026. My Drama is the minnow, with 5M+ Android installs, but it is the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. ShortMax operates from Hong Kong and seems to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. Just outside this lineup, GoodShort holds, for context, about 6%. Winner: ReelShort, by a narrow margin, on market share.
Round 2: What It Costs
The apps look most alike in this round. Each of ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave offers a weekly pass at roughly $19.99 in the US App Store, and every one auto-renews. DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts at $7.99, and ShortMax also lists a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”. Auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99, plus special offers from $4.99, show the different route DramaBox takes. The standout is DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, the only verified monthly plan in these US listings. Because four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass come to about $80, a monthly plan at less than half that is the wiser buy for steady viewers. The number on your screen may differ, because prices change by country, platform and promotion. Winner: DramaWave, as its monthly plan beats four weekly renewals by a wide margin.
Round 3: Free Viewing Options
When it comes to free viewing, the marketing gets loud and the details grow thin. ReelShort’s own blog notes that one rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes and that the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free. Logging in seven days in a row brings 100+ coins, though free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. Looking for the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying? ReelShort also operates official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Keep away from look-alike sites, modded APKs and “unlimited coins” generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. DramaBox has free options too, but its exact numbers for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. Winner: clearly ReelShort.
Round 4: Screens and Platforms
Screens are where these apps truly part ways. ReelShort covers iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, and it also streams in a browser at reelshort.com with progress that syncs across devices. Since its domain redirects to the ShortTV website, ShortMax offers web browsing too. DramaBox’s website mostly points you back to the app, and DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps. The trump card belongs to My Drama, which has an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show. Want nothing more than a shorts app on your phone? Any of the five will do. Winner: ReelShort overall, although My Drama wins the living room.
Round 5: Catalog and Originals
On raw numbers, ShortMax is unbeatable. The app claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages, and as of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had made more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations. Reports say more than 80% of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, and the app claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages. ReelShort wins on recognizable hits, including The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. An LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis are DramaBox’s answer. Since Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years, My Drama has the most interesting pipeline. Winner: ShortMax, by sheer volume.

Round 6: Extras and Fine Print
In this round, DramaWave runs away with it. No other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing, while its App Store listing promises offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video. ReelShort’s cross-device sync comes in as the next most useful perk for viewers who switch between phone and laptop. And take a look at the fine print, which varies more than the prices do. My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity, and ShortMax’s terms say refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”. Always cancel in App Store or Google Play settings, because on any of these apps deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. Round winner: DramaWave.
Best For: The Final Picks
How you watch determines the best choice, since no single short drama app wins every round. Thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices, ReelShort is best for web viewing. As the one app here with a verified tvOS version, and the only one with Fox-produced originals, My Drama is best for Apple TV. Best for commuters and steady bingers is DramaWave, which pairs offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. Best for sheer volume is ShortMax, whose claimed 50,000+ dramas overshadow everything else in the grid. For backing the current revenue leader, DramaBox is best: Sensor Tower ranked it first in Q1 2026, and it was picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. ReelShort is once again best for free, legitimate sampling, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Choose one if you are tempted by all five, then cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
